Q: What is Thai Yoga Bodywork?
Thai Yoga Bodywork (TYB) is a style of Thai Massage taught at Thai Yoga Bodywork in Minneapolis, taught by Tanya Boigenzahn at Devanadi Yoga. It is based in the style of Thai Massage traditionally practiced in northern Thailand. TYB combines rhythmic massage, assisted yoga stretches, acupressure points, and moving meditation.
Q: Do I have to be very flexible to receive Thai Yoga Bodywork?
TYB does involve moving bodies through stretches and yoga-type poses. Though it is always performed within your range of motion. Your flexibility can increase using TYB but you do not need to be flexible to receive TYB.
Q: I have trouble getting up and down from the floor, can I get TYB on the massage table?
Thai Yoga Bodywork is generally preformed on a mat on the floor. If getting on and off the floor is not an option for your body you can request that your therapist add Thai stretching to your table massage session.
Q: Does Thai Yoga Bodywork hurt?
Some modalities of Thai Massage are known for being painful. The modality practiced at Threshold Healing is not this style of Thai Massage. TYB works with clients in their range of comfort while also working areas of discomfort. Your session should never feel painful. (Holding breath or wincing through discomfort is a sign of too much or too fast). Your practitioner will check in through out your session to assure your comfort is prioritized.
Q: What type of clothing should I wear?
Flexible clothing that will keep you warm enough is recommended. Sessions are preformed on the floor (on a large mat). If you tend to be cool it is recommended to wear a long sleeve shirt and long stretchy pants. (Similar to what your would wear to a yoga class or workout)
Q: I have no yoga practice, can I do Thai Massage?
Absolutely. Thai Yoga Bodywork is not only for Yogis. It is for all bodies.
Q: I have received Thai bodywork in Thailand, how is this the same/different?
Thai Yoga Bodywork tends to be more gentle and slower than traditional services performed in Thailand.
Q: What issues is Thai best releasing?
Thai Yoga Bodywork is an excellent full-body session. It is great at addressing lower body issues and stuck energy in the body. It tends to leave people feeling lighter and more mobile. Thai is a great choice for a session during the day when you need to stay active after. Thai leaves clients feeling more awake and active after sessions.
